Label rolls: what to buy and what to avoid

Most trouble with a label printer starts in the roll, not in the printer. Here is what is worth knowing before you order.

Check before ordering

An A6 courier label will not fit an 80 mm printer

The most common shipping label is A6 — 100 × 150 mm. A printer with a maximum width of 80 mm cannot print that at full size, and no driver setting changes it.

There are two ways around it: print scaled down on an 80 mm roll, or use the carrier's smaller label format where one is offered. Send us one of your own label files before you buy and we will print it here, so you see the result before you pay.

What fits

Rolls that suit a 20–80 mm printer

  • Width between 20 and 80 mm — measured across the whole roll, not just the printed area.
  • Direct thermal labels, not thermal transfer. Thermal transfer needs a ribbon; this printer has none and needs none.
  • Outer roll diameter — make sure the roll fits the compartment, not only that the width matches.
  • Labels with a gap between them are the simplest option: the sensor finds the gap on its own, so you do not have to measure anything by hand.

Honestly about thermal print

How long the print lasts

On thermal paper the image is made by heat — which is exactly why heat also destroys it. A label left on a car dashboard in summer, or in a sunny window, can become unreadable within weeks.

For everyday work that is no obstacle: a parcel is delivered in days, a price tag is replaced in months, a warehouse label is read by a scanner. If your marking has to survive for years, or resist damp and rubbing, thermal print is the wrong tool, and we will say so rather than sell a printer at any cost.

  • Store rolls somewhere cool and dark, not on a windowsill.
  • Do not cover a label with packing tape or let solvents touch it — the text can disappear.
  • Only one side of thermal paper is printable. A blank print usually means the roll went in the wrong way round.
What we have learned

Is the cheapest roll the cheapest

Cheap thermal paper with a thin coating prints fainter and wears the print head faster — and the head is the one expensive part of this printer. The saving per roll is a few cents; replacing a head usually costs about as much as a new printer.

We run the same type of roll every day at Čaka iela 37, so what we recommend is what we use ourselves, not what is left over in the storeroom.
